ATT

DSL modemImage via Wikipedia I got a referral card from my mother so I could contact att/sbc and get a 25 dollar reward for roping her into this conglomerate called att.

I went online and had trouble finding the address. Why, you ask? Because they don't really want to pay you 25 dollars so they are hiding from you. When I found the site they also gave a phone number to dial and having been on "push 12/3/32/and 15 and what I did not hear you do you want me to repeat this menu hell" a lot recently I decided to continue online where you have to go to bumfreakin Egypt to get a code or you can simply put in your telephone number. Not!

I put in the telephone number and they say this number is incorrect. I beg to differ with them. I use this number all the time as do the many friends and telemarketer friends I have. So at the top was a "contact us" web address, so I wrote them a letter and this is what I wrote:

I got my mother set up in the name of ####### with dsl. I tried to put my number in on your referral page where it asks for a phone number and it will not take my number. It says it is invalid.

It would be nice if you would make it a little easier to get a referral reward like letting me put my number in and looking at her hook up and saying yes we did hook her up and thank you for being responsible for that and your check is in the mail instead of asking me to go through dial up hell or go through all this mess to get it.

I already had to buy her a router for 32 dollars at my own expense because you don't send the right equipment for older computers. It would be nice if you made it a little easier to get an 82 year old woman set up just to get on the computer to get her email.

I had no problem with sbc but now that you big corporate guys at att are involved as usual it is an act of congress to get any satisfaction. I can not stand att. You are so disorganized, my grandson could do a better job and he isn't even talking yet.

If you would spend more time just giving people credit and less time calling me three times a week to ask if I want att/sbc pro, WHICH I ALREADY HAVE! I would be a happy woman.

Don't call me any more. Sometimes I like to take a nap in the afternoon and your harrassing calls are very disruptive.
Thank you for your time. If you even read these emails.
##### #####

After I did this and went to take her on her rounds today, she said she had spent 3 hours with two different people trying to reset her password because it wouldn't take hers any more. Don't ask, I don't, I don't know either. But they had her in ms dos and I don't know why. So I got online and in dialup hell again and got it set up in about ten minutes.

As I was leaving she asked me to find games for her, so I did and she said now where is hold em poker? lol I hope att/sbc is not tracking this dear little MTV watching lady who just gets on to get her email.

You sure told them. It is so annoying when they give you a bunch of rigamarole just to do something that ought to be simple. Sheesh!

I get my broadband internet from Cox Communications. Most of the time, I have no trouble with it. What trouble I've had proved to be not their fault, but trouble with a construction site just a couple of blocks away from us. So, it might be worth looking at Cox, if they are available where you are.

Try up here at Grand Lake. We have no choice. I have to use SSTELCO (Salina Spavinaw Telephone Co.). The service ain't bad but I think $39.99 a month for Mid-Speed DSL is a bit much ($59.99 for High-Speed). It's either them or Satellite and it's $99.99/month.

D When you are playing any word game with my mom almost any word counts. She tries to use crossword words and archaic words. I am constantly getting the ditionary with her.

Merlin, we have had satellite for 20 years. We just got Cox in the last couple of years and we just got dsl this year. I like the sbc features but I think you are going to have some of these problems no matter who you are with. Although I didn't have that much trouble with sbc before att jumped on with them. But we figured we are paying less per year for satellite than we would for 6 months of cable.

Dub, that is nuts! But they got you where they want you, like sbc, there is no competition out here. Does that price include your telephone bill? I am paying 17 dollars for dsl pro which is less than if I had dial up with something like call wave so I would know when someone is calling on the phone.

I used to get that with dial up cole, constantly because the power company doesn't keep up with the growth of this area so it is always too little to late so we have power surges all the time. They don't affect the dsl but they did dial up. I have gotten in the habit of putting everything in notepad unless notepad is open and unsaved. lol

Deduct $25 from your next payment and staple the referral card to it. HA!
Your mom sounds adorable.

Don had enough of SBC last summer when he cut the lines coming into the house ... lol
Comcast has a strangehold on the highspeed internet here . Believe me if we had a choice with companies we would not be using Comcast ! Last time we had trouble with a connection they said we had too much bandwidth ... WTF how do you have too much ???!!!

Loved your letter to the bastards :)

We are a very rural town with 2 ISP companies, both strictly dial-up. I went with the one that provides local phone and get mine et al for 'round $30 a month. Not bad service a'tall stays connected unless there's a bad storm it's just SLOW as all get out! Your Mom sounds feisty and cut, does she win at Hold Em Poker?? I watch that on TV, too, I'd lose my shirt if I ever played that. :D

Although I don't work for AT&T, I am sorry to hear you had such a hard time. After endless amounts of going around in circles with Talk America and DSL, I found out that I was too far from a central hub to be able to get it. So I had to swallow my pride and switch back to AT&T (which is still basically SBC [at least in Michigan] with an AT&T mask). They have been very helpful with me.

And I didn't read through all the comments, but I've found with automated calling systems, if you just keep pressing '0' (zero) eventually it will put you through to a live person.

I left SBC (now AT&T but still calling themselves SBC Michigan) because of crappy customer service and even crappier reception and repair service on my phone line. I was with Talk America for a few years and after about 9 months of asking (actually badgering them incessantly) about DSL, they finally told me I was 1/2 mile too far from the central hub.

Anyway, I hope things work out better for you with AT&T.

How cute is your mom for watching MTV?!? Keepin' it hip even at 80! I hope I'm that cool when I'm her age. ;) I have to say, you were a lot more diplomatic than I would have been...I CANNOT stand dial up hell. When you do finally get through to someone, that person never knows what the hell he/she is talking about, lol. You would've had to PRY me off of the watchtower, rifle and all! In the next letter, you should write: "Give me my $25 now, motherf***ers!" Yeah, I think that'll go over well, don't you, lol!?

Sheri, I went to MCI because they promised me better rate on phone, but after all the hidden costs it was more so I went back to sbc. I never had any trouble with sbc until att joined them. We just got dsl this summer. You just can't win. Thanks for the info about hitting 0.

Yes, I think you would be considered a terrorist threat, red alert. LMAO

Thanks Butterfly.
CYN, I don't know how these companies get rights over one area. I figure they have a deal with each other. Ok, you can rape this community, we will take this one. lol But anything is better than peoplepc.
She is fiesy Steph, and gets real irritated at me sometimes. She called again today and was using the wrong password. We just went through this yesterday. lol No that isn't a bad price, but dsl is absolute heaven. I just love it. I am paying 17 a month for dsl pro which is supposed to be faster. But with my phone and all the taxes it doesn't seem like such a good deal.

I'm with Merlin, I get my broadband with Cox and rarely have any trouble unless someone digging where they shouldn't cuts a line. It's been very dependable. As for the phones, when Cingular took over BellSouth Mobility and started offering free unlimited nationwide long distance, unlimited nights and weekends....I cut SCB(Bell South) out of my life.

I like your mom.

Slim I don't have a lot of trouble with actual phone service. I just think when they have a referrals program they shouldn't make it so hard for you to collect.
She is nutty Netdoll
Cell phone companies are even worse and you have to look carefully at your statement every month.

I know exactly how it is. I'm going through the same kind of thing with ATT/SBC right now. The whole "that phone number is not valid" and a complete run-around when I call. It's the same with MCI though...that's why I switched. I was hoping it would be better with ATT. Oh how VERY wrong I was.
lol! That thing about your mom is absolutely precious. :)

And to think that I was considering ditching cox for SBC or ATT, whatever the hell they want to call themselves. Thanks for the heads up. hehe

And if it makes you feel any better I think all big corporations are like that. Heck I work for satelitte and I get screamed at a lot because the person didn't dial the right now for the referrel program or something like that. I almost feel bad... almost. haha I'm evil.
