What's In Your Makeup
This is not something you will probably like reading but I like to stay informed.
I asked Mango for more info on cosmetics and bad things in them since I love them so much and much to my dismay I have found out that almost everything we use has some kind of animal part in it. I was not connecting her research on mad cow disease with the makeup and other things. The FDA notes that the primary path of human exposure to BSE is through ingesting beef, and other food, from cattle, but points out that small doses of the infectious prions that cause mad cow disease can be found in cosmetics. There are similar diseases in other animals but they have been given different names. The brain with these diseases also looks very similar to the brain of a patient with Alzheimers. I don't want anyone including me to be scared to death but I think to be better informed is always a good thing and you can make decisions better for you and yours.
Evidently everyone and every thing has what is called prions if I understand this correctly. They seem to exist on the cellular membrane of brain tissue. No one seems to know it's function, but if it starts replicating itself that is when BSE(bovine spongiform encephalopathy), CWD (Chronic Wasting Disease)and JCD( Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease) diseases occur. They say this disease that is the result of this replication has no DNA, but seems to be more of a crystal. There is no cure. It remains on tools and saws and in the remains which are used for other things. Especially in cows. It cannot be autoclaved or burned. Even after exposure for an hour to a temp. of 680 degrees Celsius-enough to melt lead-and can withstand antibiotics, boiling water, bleach, formaldehyde and a variety of solvents, detergents and enzymes known to destroy most known bacteria and viruses.(This from Howard Lyman: Mad Cowboy) There is no testing by our Agricultural Dept. All animals are fed animal remains in their feed. The crazy part that M was looking into was deer because she lived in an area with deer. The CSU and the CDC were experimenting by injecting mule deer with BSE to see how infectious it was. The deer escaped and contaminated an entire area. Hundreds of deer died, leaving yearlings and young deer without parents. Coyotes, wolves and cougars fed on the remains of the deer that died with this infection. So once again worse gets worse perpetrated by stupid humans. They also use cattle blood and by-products in fertilizer and someone who commented on M's blog said that the sawdust taken from the slaughterhouses was taken to make potting soil for nurseries. I was just astounded at all the products that use animal parts. Practically everything we use. These are some but not all:

As you know Oprah was sued by the beef industry and everything about this disease is really hush hush. No one is saying anything. So you might use some discretion in things you use and get out those old home remedies. . So it looks like if we go naked ,ugly, and stinky, with our natural color of hair, don't ever use any kind of medicine and grow our own fruits and vegetables without pesticides or fertilizers than we might be safer. There aren't many alternatives are there? (this may sound dumb) The one I hated the most was marshmallows. I hate to tell you this but I like church lady fruit salad with marshmallows. Bummer! But I can't stop living my life or eating, or using shampoo, or deoderant, for gosh sakes. But I can change some things and I will be looking into those things.

Red, thank you for carrying the torch. I know these things are not pleasant for folks to face but I’ve found that it’s the WOMEN who aren’t afraid to dig for the truth and connect the dots. One woman in New York had her mom die of a strange illness. Her mom worked at a racetrack for over 20 years working in a food booth. Something peaked this woman’s interest and she began checking into other deaths at the racetrack and found at least 10 more people who had recently died of this illness. These people were either regulars at the track or were vendors. She investigated and connected the dots and was the one who discovered a cluster of BSE related deaths from eating contaminated beef from a food booth at the track. IT ONLY TAKES ONE PERSON TO CHANGE THE WORLD. Because of my circumstances, I was the one who connected the dots with Chronic Wasting Disease in deer in Colorado. A couple of letters to online news agencies started the investigation that alerted the world to the deaths of our deer population.
We have many scary things ahead of us. Red is aware of the Teflon problem and the toothpaste problem. We have avian flu ahead of us (don’t EVEN get me started on that one). We may not each be scientists and have PHD’s…but we know our neighborhood. Sometimes it just takes one person who wonders why there are so many cases of multiple sclerosis on her street or why there are so many birth deformities. We may not have the ear of the power’s that be…but we have our blogs. This internet “consciousness” does have an affect…it does make a difference to get news out that main stream media won’t touch.
So, thank you dear Red. I think I’ve found a soul sister in you. SHINE ON SWEET LADY

Mango brings up some very interesting points! I am in the process of being worked up for MS right now, but mine if I do have it, I believe is attributable to excessive intake of aspartame (in Diet Coke). I read your posting, along with Red's list o' trauma (I too, refuse to give up marshmallows) and it really is scary stuff!
I try (it *is* hard) to use products that are organic (like deoderant and make up) things that are forseeable; but the list up there just proves that even our best measures would still fall short somewhere. I had no idea why little girls now days are developing so much quicker and going into puberty faster- until another pediatric nurse told me that it's due to the hormones fed to the animals who end up on our dinner plates. Hmmm....Makes sense doesn't it? Makes me want to cringe thinking that if these are the visable results we can see, what are the consequences that are unseen- those neatly tucked away in our organs?
On another, happier note: some cruelty free cosmetic companies I have found are: Benefit, Urban Decay, Molton Brown, and Burt's Bees. But like I said earlier, none of it matters if it's counterbalanced by other things we're doing that we're unaware of.
Marshmallows? Dang.....

Thanks for the cruelty free list GCS. I use a mineral makeup that is cruelty free also. By Youngblood,http://www.makeupartistschoice.com/youngblood.htm,
it costs 36 dollars but it lasts me a year. That is interesting that you brought up the Aspartame, I heared of a woman who had MS symptoms and they were getting so bad she had to start using a wheelchair, and when she stopped drinnking diet coke she quit having problems. My husband had terrible leg cramps at night and thought it was the medicine with the calcium blockers he used but when he stopped the diet coke he quit having leg cramps. He didn't have even one a day. So now fortunately there is Splenda, until they find some organism or something in it. I have to believe it does some good to be informed and do as much as you can. Even if it is counterbalanced I feel like it is better than doing nothing at all. Especially for our kids and thiers. I just heard if even if we all stop(right now) using fossil fuels and all the things that cause greenhouse gasses that in 100 years we will have no polar bears and no polar ice because of global warming, because we have already filled the atmosphere with so much polution. So we better all start working on cutting back and conserving. I hadn't heard about the hormones. Your welcome M. The small voice carries farther than we think sometimes. And thank you for the new info. Love ya gals.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.(1) A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.
According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame:(2) Brain tumors, MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson's disease, alzheimer's, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.
