Oklahoma and Colorado 2009

It always takes us a couple of days to unwind. The leaves were gone from the Aspen in the higher elevations and there was earlier snow than there had ever been this year so the ski resorts were starting to open.

We went to Creede Colorado first. We have been going there about 20 years and like it because of the absence of commercialism. We usually go in the warmer months and go over the passes on four-wheelers.

Sometimes we drive to lake city which is another small town where you can go over the passes from the opposite direction. It is a much easier path from there. There are also more places to rent vehicles like jeeps there.

Between Lake City and Creede are Crystal Falls, Bristol Head which is a mountain that is a days four-wheeling to the top. Been there. It's a long hard ride but so worth it. I actually sang "The Sound Of Music" on top. Must have been the altitude.

Also on the way is Slumgulion Pass, named for the stew the miners used to eat. The rocks are the same color as the stew.

Right before you get to Lake City is the Alfred Packer site. It's said he and five others set out to go to Gunnison. He was the only one that survived. He was accused of cannibalizing his other traveling companions. More about him here
